Think Tank EUROPA has invited Dr. Eirikur Bergmann, professor of Politics at Bifröst University, to unpack the referendum.
BACKGROUND:
Iceland originally applied for EU membership in 2009 after the financial crisis, but the negotiations were put on hold in 2013 by a new centre-right government opposed to EU membership.
More than a decade on, membership negotiations are back on the agenda – and opinion polls predict a tight race. Icelanders have long resisted full EU membership, unwilling to cede control over their independence, especially fisheries. But rising geopolitical threats in the Arctic, coupled with Donald Trump’s threats to buy or invade Greenland, have pushed Iceland to reconsider closer ties with the EU.
