Romania's Political Earthquake - From Bucharest to Brussels

The first round of Romania's presidential election sent shockwaves through the country and across Europe on November 24. Against all expectations, Calin Georgescu - a former member of the right-wing party AUR with a history of pro-Russia, anti-NATO and anti-EU statements - topped the vote in what's seen as a political earthquake. Georgescu now faces Elena Lasconi of the liberal USR party in the second round on December 8, a race that also determines who represents Romania in the European Council.

Between the two rounds, Romanians cast their votes in parliamentary elections on December 1. The current prime minister of the social democratic government, Marcel Ciolacu, has resigned as party leader after failing to enter the final round of the presidential race. At stake is whether one of the few remaining centre-left governments in the EU will stay in power.

How should we understand the results? And what will they mean for Romania and the EU? Join us when Costin Ciobanu, political researcher at Aarhus University, unfolds the elections and their broader implications.

Ciobanu is a postdcoc studying voter behavior and political polarization with a Ph.D. from McGill University. He worked as a political advisor in Romania before joining academics.
