Event Description
On October 20, Moldovans voted in the first round of the presidential election, resulting in a runoff between the incumbent, Maia Sandu, and Alexandr Stoianoglo, whose candidacy is backed by the pro-Russia Socialist Party.
On the same day, a referendum was held where, by a razor-thin majority, voters chose to enshrine the country’s commitment to join the EU in its constitution.
On November 3, Moldovans will head to the ballot boxes once again for the second round to decide who will be the country’s next president, in a race predicted to be very close.
In this webinar, former Prime Minister of Moldova Natalia Gavrilița will join director Lykke Friis to discuss the possible outcomes of this election, next year’s parliamentary elections, the consequences of these for Moldova - a country caught between external pressures and internal divisions – and for Europe.
